Parkinson's Disease Treatment in India

There is no special test or diagnosis exists for Parkinson's disease. This makes difficult to diagnose the disease, especially at an early stage. However, certain signs and symptoms may indicate Parkinson’s. Your neurologist will diagnose the disease based on your medical history, a review of your signs and symptoms, and neurological and physical reports.


The main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are stiffness, tremor, slow movement, and rigidity. The person may experience pain and difficulty while sleeping, walking or even a loss of the scene of smell.

Your neurologist may suggest specific single-photon emission computerized tomography SPECT scan called a dopamine transporter (DAT) scan. this test will help to understand whether you have Parkinson’s or not. The symptoms and neurological examination that will ultimately determine the disease. The doctor may ask for a lab test, a blood test to rule out you’re the cause of your symptoms.

MRI, CT, ultrasound of the brain, and PET scans may also be suggested by the doctor. Imaging tests aren't particularly helpful for diagnosing Parkinson's disease but it will help to rule out other disorders.

Your doctor might ask a few questions to determined Parkinson’s

  • Any existing conditions.
  • Any medication the person is taking.
  • Whether there has been exposed to certain chemicals.
  • If any close family members have or have had Parkinson's.
  • If the person has any genetic factors that might increase the risk.

The neurologist may evaluate your motor movement:

  • Walking and gait.
  • Coordination and balance.
  • Some simple hand tasks.
  • Coordination of the legs and arms.
  • Muscle tone. A neurologist who is specialized in movement disorder will be able to make the most accurate decision. After evaluating all your neurological exam, your condition and symptoms present your neurologist will prescribe a medication for you. sometimes it takes time to diagnose Parkinson’s, in such case regular flow-up is recommended.

What indicates Parkinson's?

  • More than two main Parkinson's symptoms are present.
  • An early sign of symptoms is visible on one side of the body.
  • Tremor shaking is more evident at rest.
  • Scans and tests rule out other causes.
  • levodopa (a Parkinson's drug) produces a positive response.

Treatment for Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease can’t be a cure, but medication will help control the symptoms. In some cases, surgery is advised. A lifestyle changes can be helpful like exercising, aerobics, stretching such physical therapies which focus on balance is important.

1. Surgical procedure

DBS- deep brain stimulation

In this procedure, your surgeon will implant electrodes into a specific part of your brain. These electrodes are connected to a generator which is implanted in your chest. It sends electrical pulses to your brain and may help reduce Parkinson's disease symptoms. A doctor will adjust the settings as per your condition. Like other surgical procedures, this surgery also has its own risks such as infection, brain hemorrhage or stroke. Sometimes people experience the problem with the DBS system due to stimulation and the doctor needs to replace or adjust some parts of it.

2. Medication

medication can help you manage problems like tremor, walking, and movement. Medication increase dopamine. People with Parkinson’s have low dopamine concentration. with the help of medication and therapies, one can address some of the symptoms and can improve quality of life.

Doctor may prescribe the medication which includes:

  • Carbidopa-levodopa.
  • Carbidopa-levodopa infusion.
  • MAO B inhibitors.
  • Dopamine agonists.
  • Anticholinergics.
  • Amantadine.
  • Catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors.

3. Alternative medicines

Supportive therapies may help ease some symptoms.

  • Massage - Massage therapy helps release tension and relax the muscles.
  • Yoga - In yoga stretching the movements and poses may increase the balance and flexibility.
  • Alexander technique - This technique helps on muscle postures. it may reduce muscle pain and tension.
  • Meditation - In meditation, you focus your mind on one thing, it reduces the stress and improves your sense of believing.
  • Pet therapy - having a pet like a cat or a dog at home will improve your flexibility, movement, and emotional health.
