Uterine fibroids are growths in your Uterus. They are mostly found while a routine pelvic exam. The doctor may feel irregularities in the shape of your uterus, suggesting fibroid presence. You can decide whether you want to have them or removed. But it depends in which part it is found and how bad your symptoms are.

If you have abnormal menstrual bleeding, your doctor may require another test. These may include a complete blood count (CBC) to determine if you have anaemia because of chronic blood loss and other blood tests to rule out bleeding disorders or thyroid problems.

3. Imaging Test:

Your doctor may also be required to imagine a test, which may include:


  • Hysterosalpingography.
  • Hysterosonography.
  • Hysteroscopy.

What causes them?


Hormones such as Estrogen and Progesterone that make the lining of your uterus thicken every month during your period. They also affect fibroid growth. Fibroids usually shrink when hormone production slows down during menopause.


Researchers have found that if fibroid run in your family. Your mother, grandmother or even sister has a history of this condition, you may develop it as well.


Pregnancy increases the production of Estrogen and Progesterone in your body. Fibroids may develop and trend to grow rapidly while you're pregnant.

What are the Types of Fibroids?

Intramural fibroids It is the most common type of fibroid. They appear within the muscular wall of the uterus. They can grow larger and can stretch your womb

Subserosal fibroids Subserosal fibroids grow outside of your uterus. They may grow large enough to make your womb appear bigger on one side.

Pedunculated fibroids These fibroids can grow both inside and outside the uterus. Inside the uterus, this type of growth is called a "Pedunculated Submucosal Fibroid" and Outside the uterus, it's called a "Pedunculated Subserosal Fibroid"

Submucosal fibroids This types of tumors develop in the middle muscle layer of your uterus.

Who is at Risk for Fibroids?

Besides age, there are few more causes that increase the risk of getting uterine fibroid.

  • Pregnancy.
  • A family history of fibroids.
  • Age of 30 or older.
  • A high body weights.
  • Getting your first period at a young age.
  • Birth control use.
  • Vitamin D deficiency.
  • Eating too much Red meat.
  • Alcohol.

How Fibroids are Treated?

The doctor will plan treatment on the basis of your fibroid size, your age and considering your overall health.

  • Avoid eating high- calorie food and red meat. instead, opt food like green vegetables, green tea, high in flavonoids, and cold-water fish such as tuna or salmon.
  • If you are overweight then losing weight can also benefit from women with fibroids.
  • Medication to regulate your hormone levels may be prescribed to shrink fibroids.

    If you decide to have surgery you have three options:

  • Endometrial ablation.
  • Myomectomy.
  • Hysterectomy. Your doctor will guide you about the surgery procedure.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

  • A newer and non-invasive surgical procedure is forced ultrasound surgery (FUS). In this procedure, you have to lie down in the MRI machine that allows doctors to visualize the inside of your uterus. High energy/ frequency sound waves are directed to remove or to destroy them.
  • Myolysis – It shrinks the fibroids.
  • Cryomyolysis- It freezes the fibroids.
  • Endometrial Ablation - In this procedure inserting a special instrument into your uterus to destroy the uterine lining using heat, electric current, or hot water.
  • Uterine Artery Embolization- small particles are injected into the uterus in order to cut off the fibroids blood supply.
